Out of Season

Empty seaside promenade

There is something  uniquely sad about an English seaside town out of season, a feeling that is further amplified by grey skies and chill winds. If you want a warm meal between 2pm and 6pm, the chances are you will be out of luck.

The misery arcades are optimistically illuminated but there is no-one to attract.. The moths are not flying tonight. The promenade will sing with the laughter and excitement of children a few weeks hence, but for now is graced only by people walking their dogs (and, in some cases, by dogs walking their owners), heads bent against the wind. And on this day, by an optimistic photographer taking his camera for a walk.
